Welcome to the Mill District…Now Get Out!

Mill River Rec

Mill River Recreation Area keeps the Mill District active, with two basketball courts, two tennis courts, two little league-size baseball fields, a full playground, and a swimming pool for the summertime. Little ones are welcome too, with a toddler playground – including baby swings, and a wading pool.

A perfect place to gather, Mill River Rec has picnic tables and barbecues available, as well as a pavilion that can be reserved through the LSSE (call 413-259-3065).

And if you’re wanting to wander, the Mill River Conservation Trails begin right at the edge of the Recreation Area!

Puffer’s Pond

Just a short walk down Summer Street brings you to Puffer’s Pond. Perfect for cooling down in the summer and walking all year-round, Puffer’s Pond is open for swimming, canoeing, fishing, and picnicking.

You can also reach Puffer’s Pond by walking along the Mill River Trails from the Mill River Recreation Area!

The Robert Frost Trail

One of the longest hiking trails in Massachusetts, the trail cuts right through the Mill District! Maps for the Robert Frost Trail can be found at the Mill District General Store.

Cherry Hill Golf Course

In the Mill District, driving is for golfers! Get out on the links in short order at this beautiful 9-hole course surrounded by nature. Open to golfers in the warmer months, the course is active all winter with sledding, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing. Bring your own equipment and enjoy views of the Berkshires while playing around featured ponds, wetlands, and native trees. Golf alone, with friends, or join one of their leagues!

Cross-Country Skiing, North Amherst

In the winter, the Town of Amherst grooms and maintains ski trails at Cherry Hill Golf Course, supported by the Amherst Nordic Ski Association, which was founded in 2018 to promote and enhance Nordic (cross country) skiing in Amherst and beyond. Amherst Nordic provides skiing opportunities for kids and adults, racers and tourers, and has a mission to get people outside in the winter enjoying healthy, exciting, and fun recreation on skinny skis. Cherry Hill is currently “bring your own” for equipment.

Explore their web page https://amherstnordic.org/ and send an email to amherstnordic@gmail.com if you would like to receive emailed conditions reports and event announcements!
