Outdoor Experiences

Opportunities abound for outdoor activities in and around The Mill District

Whether you’re a biking enthusiast, an avid hiker, or simply someone looking to soak in nature’s wonders, the Mill District is perfectly positioned to kick-start your adventure. With its proximity to scenic trails, a golf course, parks, ponds, and lush forests, The Mill District acts as the ideal launchpad for exploring the diverse outdoor experiences of Amherst and its neighboring locales.

Mill River Rec

Mill River Recreation Area keeps the Mill District active, with two basketball courts, two tennis courts, two little league-size baseball fields, a full playground, and a swimming pool for the summertime. Little ones are welcome too, with a toddler playground – including baby swings, and a wading pool.

A perfect place to gather, Mill River Rec has picnic tables and barbecues available, as well as a pavilion that can be reserved through the LSSE (call 413-259-3065).

And if you’re wanting to wander, the Mill River Conservation Trails begin right at the edge of the Recreation Area!

Cross-Country Skiing

In the winter, the Town of Amherst grooms and maintains ski trails at Cherry Hill Golf Course, supported by the Amherst Nordic Ski Association, which was founded in 2018 to promote and enhance Nordic (cross country) skiing in Amherst and beyond. Amherst Nordic provides skiing opportunities for kids and adults, racers and tourers, and has a mission to get people outside in the winter enjoying healthy, exciting, and fun recreation on skinny skis. Cherry Hill is currently “bring your own” for equipment.

Explore their web page https://amherstnordic.org/ and send an email to amherstnordic@gmail.com if you would like to receive emailed conditions reports and event announcements!
